Got an email today from Best Buy. Awhile ago, I signed up for their Rewards Zone program — well before I started my boycott of Best Buy after an experience with crappy customer service awhile back. Today’s email comes a couple weeks in advance of my birthday, titled “A special birthday offer for a valued Reward Zone member.” Oh boy, I thought, maybe a deep discount or something for free! Not so fast… [More »]

Skiing… perhaps the only thing I like about winter. But boy, is it expensive!! Seems like most of the mediocre ski areas here in Central New York have hiked their lift ticket rates for the season. And I hate to pay those rates, when I know the major mountains in the high Adirondacks or Vermont are a much better value for the money. It’s something I’ve always wondered about… and I finally tracked down the numbers to prove myself right.
For example, a one-day lift ticket at Woods Valley in Westernville is $30 this year. They have 3 lifts, so that’s $10 per lift. But at Killington in Vermont, your $79 pass gets you onto 32 lifts, so you’re only paying $2.47 per lift! Check out the rest of my research and see for yourself… [More »]

As a somewhat picky eater, I think it’s great that Burger King prides itself on letting you “have it your way” and McDonald’s will make items “just for you” if you ask. Rather than holding one or two items from a sandwich, I’m more likely to ask for it “plain with just” one thing, rather than five. But, God forbid I ask them to clear the sandwich, then add an item that’s usually not there! [More »]

I live in Madison County. So when I’ve got something coming to me via UPS, it usually goes through their East Syracuse warehouse. But why, does it then go to Rome — passing within minutes of my house en route — only to wind up just as far away from me as it was in East Syracuse? Brown’s wasting a lot of gas, and I have to wait longer to get my stuff!

There’s a wonderful website I like to visit once in awhile when I get bored… it’s called FlashGames. You can play Flash-based versions of several different TV game shows — usually just the bonus rounds (the best part). It’s all free, the games work well (unlike some other sites I’ve tried), and it’s anyone’s guess how these guys got their hands on so many theme songs and sound effects “in the clear” (without any other background noise or talking). But when I visited the site just now… it looks like SONY ruined quite a bit of the fun. [More »]

WOW! is right! If a picture is worth a thousand words, I think that’s all we need to see. But if you wish to see some of the other ways in which Price Chopper discriminates against smaller cities… keep reading! (And yes, to be fair, I also have a “rave” about the Chopper too.) [More »]

Rant: Syracuse Airport Parking Rate Increase
According to NewsChannel 9, the ABC affiliate in Syracuse, parking rates at Syracuse Hancock International Airport are set to go up on July 1st. As if airfares themselves aren’t already expensive enough, the wonderful tax-happy government of Syracuse wants to squeeze even more blood from a stone. Let’s compare Syracuse’s rates to two other nearby airports: Rochester and Albany. [More »]
