Thruway Failing on 2005 Promise

300px-nys_thruway_signsvgHey, anyone remember back in 2005 when the New York State Thruway said it was going to start removing some of the greasy fast food joints from its service areas to make way for healthier and/or more upscale eateries?  About three and a half years later, I’m still waiting to see the changes.  In the meantime, I’ve got some alternative options just off the highway. On the Twitter Bandwagon

twitter_logo_125x29Just joined Twitter  – you can follow me at http://twitter.com/pnaw10 if you wish.  But don’t expect much immediately… I’m trying to decide exactly how I want to use it.  Seems like it’s just redundant to posting status updates on Facebook.  I may not do too much “tweeting” until I can see how Twitter is different.  (I’m also a little curious about why there’s such a fascination with what people are doing at every moment of the day.)

Don’t Delay the DTV Transition

dtv_320Even before Barack Obama was sworn in as President, he was pushing Congress to delay the DTV transition (which, technically, should be called the “analog TV shutoff,” since digital TV is already on the air).  He wants to push it back four months to June, to give people more time to prepare.  I think that’s a big, steaming load of B.S.  People have had more than enough time to get ready. Rave: “Customers Suck” Forum

While checking “referrers” to one of my websites, I followed a link to a link to a link, and wound up finding a LiveJournal forum called “Customers Suck.”  I highly recommend it.  It’s a place where employees rant about customers who treat them unreasonably, have selective sight/hearing, get into temper tantrums over not being allowed to use expired coupons, etc.  I’d be tempted to submit posts about some of the people who call the newsroom with absurd requests or stupid questions, but I don’t feel like signing up for a LiveJournal account.

Crazy for Black Friday Deals

Check out this picture — look at all that traffic!  Is it a bad accident?  Nope.  It’s throngs and throngs of drivers, likely from New York City and northern New Jersey… heading to the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets shopping center.

At 1:30am, they’re all flocking to the outlets to cash in on some of the big Black Friday sales.  And they’re not getting a head start — they’re actually 90 minutes late!  The outlets opened at midnight.   [More »]

Is TV Fading Away?

I’m not talking about the analog-to-digital switch coming next February.  I’m talking about some radical changes being considered by the major TV networks, thanks to the ongoing economic crisis.

Broadcasting relies heavily on advertising.  And anyone who has ever watched TV knows a lot of that advertising comes from automakers and local car dealers.  The auto industry makes up a stunning chunk of the revenue that keeps TV going.  (Not just nationally, but locally too.)

MadTV Cancelled – I Told Ya So!

As predicted right here on this very website in February, Fox has cancelled MadTV.  The show’s co-creator is hoping to keep it alive on cable TV, even if it has to get by on a smaller budget.

While some might argue Comedy Central would be a no-brainer for this, I don’t think they’d risk putting up all that money to try to compete with SNL.  In fact, no cable network immediately comes to mind as a likely customer for this has-been show.

Ban Campaign Donations

About a week or two ago, I heard a local political ad on the radio.  One candidate was bashing an opponent for accepting campaign donations from “questionable” sources.  I don’t remember who the candidates are, but that’s irrelevant.  This kind of a situation just shouldn’t be happening to begin with. Child Abandonment Gets Out of Hand

This one is amazing… I couldn’t believe it when it came down the AP news wire at work yesterday.  Some guy in Nebraska abandoned 9 of his own children… ranging in ages from 1 to 17.  Just dropped them off at the hospital, like unwanted puppies at the pound.  And the absurd part — it was completely legal! Just Like Mom Used to Make? No Thanks!!

Normally, PETA is very well-intentioned in its crusade to stop animal cruelty.  But every now and then, they go over the line.  This week, they did it again: asking Ben & Jerry’s to use human breast milk for ice cream.  Usually the phrase “just like mom used to make” is welcome on a menu, but not on Ben & Jerry’s pints.
