Five Boro Bike Tour Review: Room for Improvement

It looked like an exciting event when my friend Shaun asked me to sign up: Bike New York’s Five Boro Bike Tour promises a “car-free” bike ride through all five boroughs of New York City, along a course stretching 42 miles. We signed up while the snow was still piling up and we started training as soon as the snow melted, eagerly anticipating the big day. But first impressions are everything, and the 2010 tour fell below my expectations. [More »]

Rant: Syracuse Airport Parking Rate Increase

According to NewsChannel 9, the ABC affiliate in Syracuse, parking rates at Syracuse Hancock International Airport are set to go up on July 1st. As if airfares themselves aren’t already expensive enough, the wonderful tax-happy government of Syracuse wants to squeeze even more blood from a stone. Let’s compare Syracuse’s rates to two other nearby airports: Rochester and Albany. [More »]

High Speed Rail: We're Not Doing it Right

Since President Obama delivered his first State of the Union address this week, followed by a subsequent appearance the next day in Tampa, Florida, there’s been much buzz about high-speed rail in America.

High-speed rail could very well be a great idea — but only if they do it right.  And so far, it looks like that’s not the case, at least not in New York State. [More »]

Taylor Swift's "Live" VMA Subway Ride: FAKE... and Here's Why

From MTV.com

From MTV.com

If you saw the MTV Video Music Awards a couple weeks ago, you may have been impressed by the “live” performance of Taylor Swift singing “You Belong to Me” during a subway ride up the F-train from Bryant Park to Rockefeller Center, coming up the stairs right outside Radio City Music Hall, where the awards were being held.  But many details in the video prove it was NOT live.  Nor did it even take place in Bryant Park or on the F-train.  After the jump, you can watch the video again and see the list of evidence. News Producing 101: Why Rundown Timing Matters

Rant: No Outdoor Syracuse Crunch Game

The Onondaga County Legislature is a bunch of morons (most of them, not all of them) for killing the idea of an outdoor AHL game at Syracuse’s Alliance Bank Stadium.  There are so many reasons why these people were just plain stupid in their actions, I don’t even know where to begin. [More »]

Still Standing, 35 Years Out of Service

From Wikipedia

Tonight I was checking a detail about the Poughkeepsie Bridge on Wikipedia while writing a post on a railroad message board I check on a semi-regular basis.  And I found, according to Wikipedia, today is the 35th anniversary of the big fire that took the bridge out of service for good… for trains, anyway. NY Lottery Ads Featuring… a Dead Man!

If you live in New York State, chances are good you’ve seen this ad — it’s been airing since 2007. Lately, the ad has been surfacing again… but did you notice the same weird thing about it that I did?

Well, did you?  Read on… [More »]

FU, SU… Who Do You Think You Are?

I’ve been to the Carrier Dome a few times, but never for an SU football or basketball game.  I always thought it’d be nice to go sometime — and now that I work normal hours, I can.  But after a very poor move Syracuse University just took against some of its most loyal fans… I don’t see myself going to the Dome again anytime soon.
