Snow Hype

I love how, as of 8:00 Saturday night, at least 21 Syracuse-area organizations have called in closings or cancellations for Sunday — and it hasn’t snowed ONE flake here yet.  Even better is how all these folks are getting up in a tizzy because we’re expecting anywhere up to 8 inches by morning!  Um, did we all forget?  This is Central New York!  IT SNOWS HERE!!  Why the heck is everyone so crazy about this snow?  Take a chill pill, people.

Rant: CNY’s Overpriced Ski Areas

This is NOT me.Skiing… perhaps the only thing I like about winter.  But boy, is it expensive!!  Seems like most of the mediocre ski areas here in Central New York have hiked their lift ticket rates for the season.  Money I don't have. And I hate to pay those rates, when I know the major mountains in the high Adirondacks or Vermont are a much better value for the money.  It’s something I’ve always wondered about… and I finally tracked down the numbers to prove myself right.

For example, a one-day lift ticket at Woods Valley in Westernville is $30 this year.  They have 3 lifts, so that’s $10 per lift.  But at Killington in Vermont, your $79 pass gets you onto 32 lifts, so you’re only paying $2.47 per lift!  Check out the rest of my research and see for yourself… »»More

Rant: Carousel Mall Smokers

No Smoking at the Mall! The Carousel Center (or Destiny USA, whatever) recently decided to issue a complete ban on smoking, throughout the entire property.  In fact, the Associated Press reports it’s the first mall anywhere in the country do instate such a wide-reaching rule.  I’m not ranting about the ban itself, but about the smokers who actually complained about how they feel the new policy is unfair to them. »»More

Rave: Onondaga Lake Park

DSCF3544For as long as I’ve known people who live in Syracuse, I’ve heard the complaints about Onondaga Lake, filled with all sorts of toxic waste and such.  In fact, look at this Google Map and you can see one of the reasons why people joke that you can predict the day’s high temperature based on just how bad the lake’s stench is on a given morning.  But just off the water, there’s one place well worth raving about: Onondaga Lake Park.  There’s plenty to see and do, and the admission is the best in town: free. »»More
