Commentary: Thruway Toll Hike Proposal

Pirated photo of Thruway toll boothThis one’s a bit overdue… two months ago, the New York State Thruway Authority announced it’s thinking about raising tolls.  What doesn’t really jive with me, is the reason they gave — declining revenues because higher gas prices are causing people to travel less often and/or avoid the Thruway to beat the tolls.  Well, that’s a load of BS, and here’s why I say so. »»More

Rant: CNY’s Overpriced Ski Areas

This is NOT me.Skiing… perhaps the only thing I like about winter.  But boy, is it expensive!!  Seems like most of the mediocre ski areas here in Central New York have hiked their lift ticket rates for the season.  Money I don't have. And I hate to pay those rates, when I know the major mountains in the high Adirondacks or Vermont are a much better value for the money.  It’s something I’ve always wondered about… and I finally tracked down the numbers to prove myself right.

For example, a one-day lift ticket at Woods Valley in Westernville is $30 this year.  They have 3 lifts, so that’s $10 per lift.  But at Killington in Vermont, your $79 pass gets you onto 32 lifts, so you’re only paying $2.47 per lift!  Check out the rest of my research and see for yourself… »»More

Touring Boston in Just 24 Hours

Boston SkylineLast week, Kelly and I marked our fourth anniversary dating.  She tried to surprise me with tickets to see comedian Dane Cook performing in Boston last weekend.  She had no luck with several eBay auctions, but we decided to go to Beantown anyway.  Being a pretty spur-of-the-moment trip, we didn’t have much time to really plan anything… but we still got to see quite a bit… all in just 24 hours, including sleep.  Click here to see the pictures.  Rather than writing a full article, I detailed the trip through the captions for each photo.

Rant: Network TV Sports Events That Run Late

What is the deal with the TV networks?  Can they EVER get a damn football game off the air ON TIME?  There’s nothing worse than sitting down to watch “The Simpons” or “The Amazing Race” on DVR, only to find out you recorded 30 minutes of football or some other show that was delayed.  Then you’re left with just the first half of the show you wanted — ultimately left to wonder how the episode ended. »»More

Rave: You Don’t Know Jack… is Back?

YDKJ Volume 3Just sitting around late Saturday night, I hear a familiar sound from Kelly’s computer — the beginning of a game of “You Don’t Know Jack.”  A sound I haven’t heard in years!  These games were awesome back when I was in college… so why haven’t we heard much about them in such a long time?  Well, after playing a few rounds, we discovered they have a brand new website… »»More

Rant: Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console

Contra: Not on the Wii Virtual ConsoleIf you have a Nintendo Wii, the title probably says it all.  What the hell is the deal with the Virtual Console feature?  Or maybe to be more accurate, I should say the Wii Shop Channel.  For probably a couple months now, I’ve been hoping they’d release the classic alien shooter game, “Contra.”  They have the sequels, “Super C” and “Contra III” so where the hell is the original?  And it’s not just Contra that’s taking forever. »»More

Rant: Fast Food Pricing Scam

As a somewhat picky eater, I think it’s great that Burger King prides itself on letting you “have it your way” and McDonald’s will make items “just for you” if you ask.  Rather than holding one or two items from a sandwich, I’m more likely to ask for it “plain with just” one thing, rather than five.  But, God forbid I ask them to clear the sandwich, then add an item that’s usually not there! »»More

Rant: Christmas on the Radio ALREADY?!

110207-reindeer.jpgI had heard some rumors that a pair of radio stations in the area have decided to do the “non-stop Christmas music” gimmick.  No big deal, someone always does it right?  BUT NOT ON THE FIRST DAY OF NOVEMBER!  Until now.  And I’m not kidding.  At all.  It’s friggin’ insane.  These people are on crack. »»More
