Primetime Emmy Awards

Emmy AwardSince I’ve spent most of the day working on the site upgrade, and it’s now very late at night, I don’t have a “full review” but rather a bunch of quick bullet points.  Check it out, then take a few moments to share your own thoughts on last night’s telecast.

First off, the complete list of winners, for anyone not familiar.

  • Ryan Seacrest as Host:  Yeah, the guy’s been around for awhile now, but I still thought they could have had someone better.  His opening routine had more lame parts (like guessing who designed people’s clothes) than good parts.
  • Family Guy Song:  Stewie and Brian did a great job making up for Seacrest’s crappy opening.
  • Guest Actors/Actresses: I didn’t like how many of the “guest actor” awards were given out ahead of time.  They’d just announce who the nominees were, and then it was tough to figure out who actually won.  In some cases, the winners came up to present the next award (instead of giving a speech).  But in one case, I don’t think they ever named the winner.
  • Lewis Black’s Rant:  Awesome.  I’ve actually been thinking of doing a rant on the stupid “tease” graphics that show up during the middle of a show — and he beat me to it.  Those things really tick me off when they block a graphic that’s actually part of the show I’m watching.
  • 30 Rock Winning Best Comedy: Terrible.  I watched one episode and it sucked.  Studio 60 and The Office are way better.  At least The Office won last year.
  • Tony Bennett: What’s the deal with him winning every category he was nominated for?  When the hell did this show even air?
  • Timing: Excellent.  Most speeches were kept to a reasonable length, and the entire show was over schedule by only 15 minutes.
  • Finally, you could tell Sally Field was about to say “God damn” when they dumped out of the delay to that generic shot of the audience.  (UPDATE: Drudge Report posted this video the day after — apparently Sally wasn’t bleeped out in Canada! But they also censored someone else earlier (I forget who at the moment).  What was the deal with that?  A quick Google search found this explantion.

This year’s Emmys also made me realize how much TV I don’t watch these days.  The show was 3 hours and 15 minutes long.  But, using the DVR, I was able to skip:

  • Commercials
  • Entire categories if it was a show I don’t watch
  • Any “boring” montages or other “boring” filler material
  • Acceptance speeches if it wasn’t the person I was rooting for
  • Acceptance speeches from non-celebrities (I know directors play a big role, but they usually don’t say anything clever or funny)

…which allowed me to get through the show in just 1 hour and 25 minutes.
