Rant: Ordering at Subway

Jared the Subway GuyHey, everyone loves to stop by Subway for a sandwich. Me too. Sure, they’re more overpriced than your corner sub/pizza shop… but sometimes they’re closer than the local place.  They’re also usually cleaner (you can actually see the subs being made) and they won’t tell you it’s gonna be 30 minutes like you just ordered a dozen large pizzas. But there’s one thing that annoys the hell out of me every time I order a sub.

I generally prefer my subs pretty plain. Gimme bread, gimme meat, gimme cheese. No mayo, no other “liquid” dressings. When it comes to veggies, all I want is a pinch — literally a pinch — of lettuce and onion, sometimes.

So we’re moving down the old “Sandwich Artist” assembly line and I ask for “very, VERY little” lettuce and onion. Every time, without fail, they throw on the regular amount. If I wanted 3 pounds of lettuce with my Subway Club, I would have went elsewhere to buy a salad. Half of it’s gonna fall out as soon as I take the first bite anyway, so why even bother?

My next favorite part is right after the entire head of shredded lettuce is dumped on my sandwich. I immediately tell them “that’s all set, it’s done.”

“Do you want any mayo or dressings on this?”

Um, do these people not know what “it’s done” means?

Every time they do this, I feel like asking that question out loud, but I always hold back. Why? I’m partly guessing they’re just following orders to ask no matter what.  And the rest of me holds back because I don’t want them sabotaging my food next time I walk in.
